Wally King
Associate Head Coach
Syracuse University
Wally King is entering his fourth season as a coach with the Syracuse University softball program. In August 2010, Wally was promoted to Associate Head Coach of the 2010 Big East Champion Syracuse softball team.
A professional hitting instructor, Wally has led Syracuse to new offensive levels in several categories. The 2011 season was the most successful season in the program’s history with a 45-13 record. This was the first time in program history that the team registered a 40 win season. The team repeated as Big East Tournament Champions and earned its first ever NCAA Tournament victory versus LSU in the first game of the College Station regional. For the program’s success, the coaching staff earned the 2011 NFCA Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2010, Syracuse ranked among the Big East’s top five teams in 10 offensive categories including slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles, triples and total bases. In King’s first year in 2009, Syracuse ranked among the Big East’s top five teams in 11 offensive categories. Syracuse improved its overall batting average by 38 points from the prior season. The overall .287 average was the second best mark in school history. On the defensive side, Syracuse matched its best overall team fielding percentage record at .986. Syracuse Head Coach Leigh Ross praises Wally as “one of the top teachers in this game. His ability to train the finer points of the game is remarkable. He has a real talent for not only detecting a flaw, but correcting it in a way that allows a player to make an immediate change.” In addition, Ross credits Wally’s personal character: “His energy, passion, and attitude are inspiring and have made a huge impact on the program.”
Prior to Syracuse, Wally was an assistant coach at Trine University in Indiana where he helped the softball team set records for runs, doubles, home runs, RBI, and wins. In 2006, Wally served under current Syracuse Head Coach Ross as a volunteer assistant coach and hitting instructor at Bowling Green University.
Wally has extensive playing background in the men’s fast pitch professional leagues. He played for 18 years from 1985-2003. His accolades in his playing career include a national championship in 2006, first team All-Ameican, state and national tournament MVP in 1997, starting centerfielder for the #4 team in the world from 1998-2002 and member of the #3 team in 2003.
